Alyssa Merwin

Counselling Intern

A Note From Alyssa

Hi there! My name is Alyssa!

So many of us quietly experience difficult moments in our everyday lives—whether it’s burnout, stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, low self-esteem, or feeling overwhelmed. I understand how hard it can be to reach out for support, especially when you’re used to carrying everything on your own. I would love to create space for you to better understand yourself, work through life’s challenges, and move toward meaningful change.

As an intern counsellor, I strive to create a calm, caring, and judgement-free space where you can feel safe being yourself. You are the expert on your own life, and I will work alongside you at a pace that feels comfortable. Together, we can explore your thoughts, emotions, experiences, and goals while developing practical tools to support you along the way.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Person-Centered Therapy. I believe everyone has unique experiences, strengths, and worldviews, and I tailor our work to your individual needs. My goal is to help you develop greater curiosity and compassion toward all parts of yourself.

Outside of counselling, I am a passionate secondary school teacher. Much of my work has involved leading a Life Skills program for neurodiverse students with complex support needs and collaborating with students and families around goal setting, behavioural concerns, social-emotional learning, and transitions to adulthood. I have also worked in community-based roles supporting individuals experiencing addiction, homelessness, and mental health concerns. These experiences have shaped my interest in supporting neurodivergent individuals and people who spend much of their lives caring for others.

I’ve lived in several communities throughout BC, including Surrey, Kelowna, Vancouver, and Fort St. John, before settling into my new home on Vancouver Island. My husband and I have been together for almost ten years, and we share our home with our two cats and golden retriever. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, playing guitar, spending time with friends and family, and being by the ocean. My ideal day includes an autumn morning, an iced coffee, a good book, and a sweet treat!

I’d love to connect with you and hear your story—in person or virtually!
